Nehemiah 1:1-11

SERMON NOTES

Series: Nehemiah
Scripture: Nehemiah 1:1–11
Title: A Burden That Leads to Prayer

BIG IDEA

Before God uses us to make an impact, He gives us a burden for what is broken and teaches us to depend on Him through prayer.

1. WE NEED A BURDEN FOR WHAT IS BROKEN

  • Before Nehemiah rebuilt the walls, God gave him a burden for what was broken.

  • We won't care about what we don't have a burden for.

  • Before we become burdened for the brokenness around us, we must recognize the brokenness within us.

  • Through Jesus, we can be forgiven, made alive, and become a new creation.

Key Scripture: Matthew 7:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17

2. A BURDEN SHOULD DRIVE US TO PRAYER

  • Nehemiah didn't immediately jump into action. He went to the Lord first.

  • Prayer is an expression of our dependence on God.

  • Prayer isn't about getting God to do what we want. It's about surrendering to His will.

Key Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

3. FOUR THINGS WE LEARN FROM NEHEMIAH'S PRAYER

1. Persistence

  • Keep praying and don't lose heart.

  • God may be working in you before He works through you.

Key Scripture: Luke 18:1

2. Praise

  • Don't let the size of your problem cause you to forget the greatness of your God.

  • Remember who God is and what He has done.

3. Repentance

  • Be burdened over your own sin before becoming burdened over the sin of others.

  • Repentance means coming to the end of yourself and turning back to God.

  • Through Jesus, our great High Priest, we can approach God's throne of grace with confidence.

Key Scripture: Hebrews 4:14–16

4. Ask

  • Don't be afraid to bring your requests to God.

  • Ask Him to provide, open doors, and work in your life, church, and community.

  • The goal of prayer isn't to get God to align with our plans. It's to bring our plans in line with His.

Key Scripture: Luke 22:42

TAKE IT HOME

As we depend on the Lord and go to Him in prayer:

  1. Be persistent.

  2. Praise Him.

  3. Be devoted to repentance.

  4. Don't be afraid to ask.

REFLECTION & APPLICATION

  1. What has God burdened your heart with?

  2. Who has God put on your heart to pursue?

  3. How would you describe your prayer life right now?

  4. Which area of Nehemiah's prayer (persistence, praise, repentance, or asking) do you need to grow in?

  5. What is one thing you need to bring before the Lord this week?

MY NOTES

THIS WEEK: Identify one person or situation God has placed on your heart. Commit to praying for them consistently and asking God to work for His glory.
